Assassination of Benazir Bhutto

by Aijaz Ali Soomro

The tragic deliberate assassination of Benazir Bhutto on 27th Dec 2007 marked in the history of Pakistan as the second event after the merciless killing of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto on 4rth April 1979 which shocked whole the nation and shacked the very roots of the state. It was just unbelievable and very much painful for a tender heart. No words to explain the state of shock, grief and emotions the nation suffered. The people belonging to all communities in the country as well as the entire world condemned killing of the great leader. Unfortunately it has been the history of Pakistan that the leaders have been killed in ruthless manner since independence. The formality of so-called investigation is done and the calamities become fairly the pages of the history books but this story should not end that way it must bring a big change in the fate of the country.

The point worth noting is to why the Bhutto family has been the target since beginning, the so-called judicial hanging of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, poisoning conspiracy of Shahnawaz Bhutto, murder of Murtaza Bhutto and now Benazir Bhutto. All these events seem to be continuation of a single agenda, to wipe out Bhutto family [read more]

  1. I have gone through your say on CSS forum about the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. I couldn’s stop myself from saying about it thus replying you here.

    In my opinion we have lost the greatest leader although she havent done much for the country as she had high callibre but there is another fact that she was never allowed to do something constructive. Yes his political tennure is filled with blames of corruption but so is the case with other politicians. Even if we study the bank balance of Army officials during last 9 years it will open the reality of our dictators who blame her for curruption.

    I think selection of Bilawal as party Chairman was the right decision and its my stance from the day it is announced. I always taken it as positive move and you can go through my comments on the link;

    I think what media is talking about Zardari about being involved in her murder is nothing but rumours and third class politics to defame PPP. It is laudable that although PPP is under media trial quite long but it survived as legacy uptill now.

    Everyone knows that Bilawal has proved him as best successor for PPP. I know its undemocratic but still first we have to instill a healthy and democratic practice by converting personality politics into party politics thus we need to strengthen parties either in democratic or undemocratic way.

    I am glad that you wrote and voiced your concern. I agree with your point of view to an extent. My stance will stay the same as your read on CSS forum.

  3. @Zehra Naqvi:
    I read your point of view on the forum you recommended. I will again say that you represent a section of friends around who believe that way and being an impartial person myself, I respect your point of view.

  4. Farrukh even I m an impartial person. I never belonged to PPP or any other party even was least interested in politics overall but the wave of terrorism and insurgency initiated after Musharaf’s decision of 9th March made me to think what is going on in our country. And whenever I tried to trace the links for finding roots it took me to the “Phenomenon of Dictatorship”

    I m of the view that only democracy is the solution to run our country smoothly. There is no place for any dictator.

  5. @Zahranaqvi:
    I am glad that this point of view is coming from an impartial person moreover, I do agree that democracy is the solution for our country. How about the statement of Bilawal Bhutto who thinks democracy as the best revenge?

  6. Democracy is the best revenge. Only problem is that it seems just about impossible, even now. As for Bilawal Bhutto Zardari heading the PPP is all right except I do not like how people and the media are making this as if its something that was passed on. It does’nt matter whether someone is a Bhutto or not because its a political party not an entitled kingship.
